    Summary

The Idaho State Department of Education (SDE) Broadband Infrastructure Improvement Grant (BIIG) Fund provides state matching funds for eligible special construction projects to deploy new fiber (or fiber-equivalent) for high-speed broadband.

Special construction projects must result in an entity's ability to achieve the target numbers below:

    • Schools
      • Internet access: Scalable to 1 Gbps per 1,000 users
      • WAN: Scalable to 10 Gbps per 1,000 users
    • Small Libraries (less than 50,000 patrons)
      • Internet access: 100 Mbps
      • WAN: Scalable to 10 Gbps until further data is developed
    • Large Libraries (greater than 50,000 patrons)
      • Internet access: 1 Gbps
      • WAN: Scalable to 10 Gbps until further data is developed

The BIIG program is intended to coincide with the E-rate program. E-Rate funding will allow for a discount rate of 80 to 90% for special construction charges. BIIG funding may then cover the local match portion, allowing the non-recurring costs of an approved special construction project to be completely funded between E-rate and SDE.
